i have to admit the first time i saw one of these films my reaction was obviously a chiche....i kind of hung my mouth open and was weirded out just like Macdonald said, but then after i thought about it, i realized how cool it was. the next film i saw i was only a tad weirded out (the eye ball scene in Dali's Un Chien andalou) and actually really started to like it. but he makes a good point, i wonder what my reaction would be if i had never seen a main stream hollywood movie before? i've never really thought about it that way untill now and i am guessing i would treat an avant-garde film like i treat the movie anchorman.
i didnt know how much the lumiere brothers influenced avant-garde cinema...i guess i never thought of their films as being rebellious so that was actually very interesting to read.
